Well, for a definition, a flow meter is a mechanical device that is used to measure the volumetric and mass flow of liquid or gases. Flow meters are also known as flow gauge devices, flow indicators etc.

For understanding it with ease look around you they are used everywhere. When you look closely at your household gas supply pipeline you will see that there is a device installed within the pipeline. It consists of a meter attached to it either analog or digital. This device measures your gas flow, pressure, and volume and generates your reading of gas usage. This device is in fact a flow meter.

The above use we have discussed is a small-scale use of it that you can see around yourself. But these flow meters are an essential requirement in heavy industries. They are used at a very large scale for the same purpose as it is used in your house.

But in industries apart from gases several chemicals and slurries flow through a pipeline. Delicate monitoring of these flowing elements is required.

There is a variety of industries where flow meters are highly applicable like food and beverage processing plants, petroleum refineries, Natural gas refineries, Chemical industries, Paint industry, molding industry, pharmaceuticals, etc.

What are Chemical Flowmeters and why you need them?

As the name suggests It is a flow meter that is used to regulate and measure the flow rate of chemicals are known as Chemical flow meter. It is used to measure the flow rate of both corrosive and non-corrosive liquids.

It’s not that chemical flow meters are used only in the chemical industry rather it is used in every industry that deals with the chemical flow. Different type of substances that flow through the pipeline in industries like solvents, detergents, harmful chemicals and gases, acids, pesticides, etc.

Chemical flow meters are commonly used at a large scale in petrochemical plants and refineries because during the refining process of petroleum various harmful gases are released and all of it needs to be control to avoid its harmful effects.

As you know industries like petroleum, pharmaceuticals, paint have plants that need manual workers for working operation. People working in these plants work on the cost of their lives. Apart from having skilled workers you also need to ensure the safety of them. Because a minor mistake in working operation can cause serious and hazardous consequences.

There are several cases you must have heard, as the failure of a plant, hazardous gas leaks, bursting of a pipeline, etc. All of them occur due to the improper handling of their flow through the pipeline. The temperature, velocity, viscosity, flow rate are critical parameters on which the flow of liquids and gases depends. If these parameters are not regulated properly then it can cause unwanted harm to both industry and its workers.

To avoid any such possibility of causing any tragedy chemical flow meters are preferred. This is why you need a chemical flow meter to get installed .

Types of Chemical Flow Meters:

Magnetic flow meter (for Aggressive chemical measurement):

magnetic flow meters are used in Chemical industries to facilitate the measurement of aggressive chemicals. It is used to measure various chemicals like (HCl) hydrochloric acid, (H2SO4) sulphuric acid, caustic soda, and brine. All of these chemicals are corrosive in nature and only magnetic flowmeters consist of electrodes and liners that are suitable and efficient in measuring such corrosive materials.

Turbine flow meters (TUF) (for Low corrosive, low viscous and clean liquid measurement):

For measuring the flow rate of liquids that are clean, less viscous, and less corrosive Turbine flow meters are used. Fluids like solvents, refined petrol, ethanol, diesel, and water. Turbine flow meters are having a compact design and are less expensive. They have chemical flow sensors to measure the flow rate. These flow meters measure the volumetric flow of liquids. Turbine flow meters have high accuracy, it can easily measure high pressure.
